Hiroshi Ezura
Co-founder & Chief Technology Officer Sanatech Life Science
I am working on the development of plant biotechnology and the social implementation. Recently I am focusing on application of gene editing technology for improvement of horticultural crops. I leaded a Japanese national project on gene editing technologies for improvement of agricultural products. There, I succeeded in developing a gene-edited tomato with high GABA contents, expecting health-promoting functions in human. In 2018, I have established a company, Sanatech Life Science, and serves as CTO. The company is succeeded in commercialization of the world first gene-edited tomato in Japan in 2021. For these achievements, I received the Tsukuba Prize in 2023.
Seminars
- Translating consumer acceptance data into actionable strategies for product development and positioning
- Identifying trust-building tactics that accelerate adoption without compromising innovation speed
- Leveraging partnerships between technology providers, CPGs, and retailers to maximize premium potential
- We have successfully improved the functionality of tomatoes using CRISPR/Cas9, and are now selling gene edited (GE) tomatoes in supermarkets in Japan. This is the first case in the world where genome-edited crops are sold in supermarkets. I will share our experience in social implementation of the GE tomatoes and discuss strategies for promoting social implementation of GE foods.
